READINGS IN AFRICAN AMERICAN RELIGION

Down By The Riverside: Readings in African American Religion. By Larry Murphy. New York: New York University Press, 2001. 495 pp. Illustrations, tables, notes, appendices, and index. $65.00 (cloth); $24.95 (paper).

William C. Turner
Duke University

This book is an important contribution to the field of studies in African American religion; indeed, its value almost defies words. It is on the order of the classic studies by Mays and Nicholson, the more recent study by Lincoln and Mamayia, the anthology by Gayraud Wilmore, and the documentary wit- ness by Milton Sernett. These are works that give a sweeping overview of black religion, exposing a reader to leading scholars and sources under one cover. Murphy's work is particularly important through the array of scholars he presents.
