American Immigration and Ethnic History: Moving the Field Forward, Staying the Course

ANNIVERSARIES, SUCH AS THE ONE being marked this year by the Journal of American Ethnic History, serve as moments in time for shareholders in an enterprise to engage in three related, but distinct projects. They can take stock of what has been accomplished in the past. They can project forward by predicting what they think the future will look like or they can preach a bit and offer their visions as to what shape the activities of the years to come ought to look like.
